Gone Kitschin'
This week’s exercise comes to us from Nora Trice, our Senior Creative Lead at A Hundred Monkeys, originally inspired by the SNL skit below.
Kitschy signage is a pretty fun category to write for—there’s something especially satisfying about subverting a genre that you can’t stand.
Come up with some hypothetical text for some items you might find in an out-there gift shop. How closely you stick to the genre is up to. Whether or not you would actually keep or display said item, should you ever receive it as a gift from that aunt who doesn’t really know you, is also your choice.
To help you a bit, think about something you’d find in a kitchen, something you’d find in a living room, or something you’d find in a backyard.
You can find our examples below…
Examples
(apron) Don’t be fusilli, life is full of pastabilities
(wine glass) Pairs well with 3rd night of reheated pasta
(poster) Live, Laugh, Love to burn this house down and live the rest of my life as a fugitive so at least I can feel something again.
